The class is designed as a skills building workshop. We will take a deep dive into drawing, proportions, value, edges, and likeness. Class exercises, will train you for painting better portraits. CLASS DESCRIPTION:Explore the ideas of being more intentional with the color choices you make for a painting. Class time will be spent working with color harmony, color schemes, and mixing the color your want. Other topics covered include techniques for color studies and establishing a core palette. Push the boundaries of working with photo reference to express your personal point of view. Class size limited to 12 students. Online help available to enlarge any of the class studies.

DRAWING AS FOUNDATION FOR PAINTING
JULY 22-24, 2026 / $575 / 9am-4pm / ON TRACK STUDIOS, FRANKLIN, TN
Don’t let your struggles with your drawing skills hold you back from successful paintings. Face your fears head on and come prepared to learn practical approaches for drawing any subject matter. You will not be creating drawings as a finished product, but learning skills through exercises and quick studies. Everyone learns differently, so this topic will be approached from many angles. Drawing is
a most important skill for any artist. Class size is limitied to 10 students.

DEVELOPING YOUR CREATIVE VOICE
AUG 5-7,2026/ BOOTH MUSEUM, CARTERSVILLE, GA
Push the boundaries of working from reference to help discover your personal point of view and help you to create more painterly paintings. There will be a heavy emphasis on specific skills to help you create a good foundation for your painting. Students will chose their own subject. CLASS DESCRIPTION:
I was fortunate to take many workshops with Everett Raymond Kinstler over two decades. His instruction changed me as a painter and a teacher. I am honored to share some of this wisdom in his home studio. My workshop deals with the underlying truth of making a strong painting. Our goal is not just to report what the subject looks like, but to find the character, the poetry of each subject while preserving each artists particular point of view. This directive was at the heart of Mr.Kinstler’s teaching and has become central to my teaching as well. Instruction will be demonstration and powerpoint lecture. The small class size will ensure tons of easel side help. A color booklet of notes and online help available for those who wish to complete the work started in class.

THE FOCUS WILL BE ON YOU!
This is an opportunity to have Dawn Whitelaw, an instructor with over 50 years of teaching experience, focus on your artistic growth by designing a program to improve one particular painting skill. For example, you could decide to work on design, color, brushwork, drawing, value or any other area of your painting where you would like to improve. After an assessment and discussion, the skill to be worked on will be identified and a series of exercises will be assigned. After completion of the exercises, and other homework assignments, skills learned will be applied to painting projects. A second assessment will lead to a personal plan to implement what you have learned.
Workshops are often designed to improve student’s paintings in a general way. This program focuses on one single skill. The idea for this program grew out of the success of the “Taking Your Work to the Next Level” workshop. The Next Level class focused on improving a single skill for three days with some online follow up. This is an opportunity to receive this type of individualized focus and training for a period of six weeks.
